Nintendo Bringing Mario Cereal to the US
Nintendo Bringing Mario Cereal to the US
First spotted as an item in Target’s online inventory, most people weren’t sure if they were reading a Mario Cereal as correct. After all, it’s one thing to have Kix or Cheerios with a Spongebob theme or something else, but America has never been like Japan where video games leak into normal consumer life. That’s about to change though, as Nintendo has made official that a Super Mario Odyssey cereal is coming to the US on December 11th.
Nintendo announced this team up with Kellogs today. Tom Prata, the VP of Strategic Inititives, spoke about their excitement in expanding the Nintendo brand. While the cereal looks like pretty standard fair, the fact that it can be scanned like an amiibo for Super Mario Odyssey coins or hearts is its biggest selling point, and it also points to a more American focused strategy for the Japanese company.
In fact, the current gaming climate is starting to look much like it did in the 90s. Nintendo has dominated console sales with the Switch while Zelda Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey have been leading game sales. Additionally, Sony is currently the king of the MMO scene with FFXV serving as a flagship title that has led to greater and greater reach into international markets. This isn’t to say American companies are doing poorly, but the largest news out of titans like Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts have all been about scandals, not about how well they are doing in the current economy. It may all be leading towards a Japan dominated gaming scene in the next few years with this first step just part of a much larger plan to gain a foothold.
In fact, Nintendo has franchised into grocery stores before. In 1993, coinciding with the release of Super Mario All-Stars, Nintendo teamed up with Shasta to produce the four themed Mario sodas above. While it’s hard to find out whether or not the Shasta sodas of the 90s were a hit or not, most 90s gamers remember them fondly (obviously Yoshi soda was the best though, because Yoshi was the coolest).
Nintendo may be aiming to turn their Mario cereal into the Shasta soda of the 2010s. Only time will tell if fans respond with the same excitement. In the meantime, maybe we should just petition to bring back those Mario sodas…
