Making In-Game Content for Cash In Minecraft
Making In-Game Content for Cash In Minecraft
We are all for community content, even more in favor of it when it benefits the community creatively and financially. So that means when Microsoft opened their community marketplace for Minecraft in June, we were ecstatic at the idea of the community starting to get some of that money as well, and in just a few weeks, they have.
Microsoft revealed today that in the two months since the Minecraft Marketplace has been open, content creators have already made over $1 million dollars. To give a comparison, Steam paid out $57 million for all of its community content four years after establishing their community market. That means Steam still has the edge, but that’s pretty impressive for just the minecraft community and considering that it only just launched. If we had to guess, we’re predicting it will beat out steam in community sales.
With Bethesda also announcing the Creation Club two months ago – their own take on community content that pays producers – things are looking up for content creators looking to bank off their contributions. It might seem laughable to think of creators making a living off 3D models in a video game, but this has been a long time in the works.
In fact, as far back as 2013, Gabe Newell – the CEO for Valve – divulged in a Q&A that the top earner for Team Fortress 2 content had made over $500,000 in a single year of producing content – which is arguably more money than anyone at Valve was making to create content for the game. The community for TF2 has since shrunk, but Steam opened the door for people with talent to profit off of creating content for the communities they love (which is exactly the sort of thing we dig).
We aren’t saying anyone should bet their future on making 3D models, but we are saying it might be a good idea to learn how. Just in case.
