Some Future Nintendo Switch Games Will Require Memory Cards

Nostalgia is a big thing for Nintendo, but this time they might have taken it a bit to far. According to the company, some future Switch games will require additional memory cards in order to be played. With the Switch’s meager 32 GB of on-board memory, this news was bound to come eventually.

The announcement came nestled into a statement about Nintendo’s new partnership with Western Digital, the company behind SanDisk. The two companies are working together to provide Nintendo branded microSDXC cards, which will be available in 64 GB and 128 GB variates.

Near the end of that press release was this sentence, “a microSD card will be needed for certain Nintendo Switch games that contain an especially large amount of content and require additional storage for players to enjoy the full experience.”

IGN was able to get a representative for Nintendo of America to clarify this statement. According to the representative,

“If you purchase a physical version of a game that requires an additional microSD memory card, you will be able to play a portion of the game right out of the box […] To enjoy the full game, downloading additional data is required. Depending on the storage requirements for each game, it may be necessary to purchase a microSD card to expand storage space. When purchasing a digital version of the game, it may also be necessary to purchase a microSD card depending on the game’s storage requirements and the storage available on the consumer’s Nintendo Switch console.”

Memory cards used to be common place in the gaming industry. It was nearly impossible to play games on the PS1 and PS2 without the addition of memory cards. If you had a large library of games and weren’t the most organized person in the world, the worst part was trying to keep straight which games were on which cards. That predicament is likely to be just as annoying with the Switch, whose memory cards are microscopic compared to those used in old PlayStations.

Of course, it isn’t the end of the world. We knew this would be coming eventually. And given the fact that SanDisk recently announced a microSXDC card with 400GB of space and a transfer speed of up to 100MB/s, maybe there’s hope that this annoyance will be relatively short lived in the long run.

The Nintendo-licensed memory cards will begin hitting stores in October.
