Fast Travel, A Weekly Gaming Recap – December 22nd Edition

by | Dec 22, 2017 | News, News Section, Videogames

Each week, the Fast Travel gaming recap helps you get caught up on everything going on in the gaming industry. We start by highlighting a few of the week’s biggest news pieces. Then it’s on to a little dollop of indie news. Followed by a helping of “The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week.” And finally, we gather up all the week’s headlines and smash them into a TL;DR pie for you to enjoy.

This Weeks Headlines

Rocket League took the gaming world by storm when it was first released back in 2015. Since then, two things have been a constant — exponential growth and sever issues. One certainly correlates with the other as Psyonix has continually struggled to cope with its own unprecedented success. It’s a problem to be sure, but certainly not the worst one to have.

According to the companies latest ‘Year in Review,’ over two billion matches have been played by the game’s over 38 million players. That’s an increase of over 50% year over year and puts Rocket League in the same realm as some of the biggest esports in the business.

Riot has just released their numbers for the 2017 year, and if there was ever a doubt that it wasn’t the biggest esport out there, they’ve been put to rest. Over 57 million unique visitors tuned in to the finals, up 14 million from last year. That’s a 30% increase in viewership in one year, and the largest spike Riot has seen yet.

As of this week, Apple has updated their official guidelines to declare that any and all software in the App Store must disclose the odds involved in Loot Boxes. There are a lot of reasons to trash Apple, but this isn’t one of them. Apple has made sure this isn’t some corporate trick either. The language in the guideline specifically states that developers must “disclose the odds of receiving each type of item to customers prior to purchase.”

Magic Leap’s new Lightwear device is the technology we’ve been waiting over half a decade for. Since 2011, the company has raised over $1.9 billion and, up until this morning, they’ve had nothing to show for it.

Lightware is the name given to the new goggle-like headgear from the company, but Magic Leap One is the moniker for the collective group of Magic Leap’s new technology. There’s three components to One, Lightware—the goggles, Lightpack— the portable engine that drives Lightware, and the unnamed control device that closely resembles the original Vive controllers.

Esport Spotlight

With most of indie on a holiday, we decided to highlight a little bit of esport this week. Specifically, the new iterations of all the NALCS teams.

Some teams are hardly recognizable, some teams are new power house combinations, and some teams look surprisingly like old teams, but with new branding. The 2018 rosters are here, and to say they are exciting is an understatement. Fans of the old teams are most certainly going to have some internal struggles as iconic members have left for new teams or disappeared from the scene altogether. Next year will be an all new game, and it’s unlikely the titans of the past will keep their spots.

My upset pick going into the season is Echo Fox. They’re almost entirely new and have more than a few big personalities on the team. That might not sound ideal, but if there’s anyone who can pull a team together, it’s Echo Fox founder Rick Fox. He played—and won—with some of the biggest names in basketball, including Kobe, Shaq, Duncan and more.
