Is L.A. Noire really what the Switch needs?
Nintendo has tried to ensure that the Switch will not suffer from a deficit of titles, and Rockstar Games recently helped this along by adding L.A. Noire to its offerings. However, as excited as we are for the Switch to have a wide variety of games, we are slightly confused by L.A. Noire.
The Switch launched strong – like, the fastest selling console in Nintendo history strong – and for good reason. Excitement for Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey essentially sky-rocketed the Switch to instant success. Couple this with other exclusive and pleasantly fun titles like Splatoon 2 and Arms, and Nintendo was making great strides to set itself apart from other consoles. But announcements like this seem to indicate a return to the mistakes of the Wii U.
The strength of the Switch is in its exclusives, its personality as a fun, light-hearted and family friendly system, and in touch screen and motion control. L.A. Noire doesn’t seem to fit any of that.
The game is a GTA like detective story, which doesn’t strike us as particularly exciting with the touch screen or portability options of the Switch. Also, L.A. Noire is unabashedly violent and vulgar. If Phelps isn’t screaming curse words at people in interrogations, he is investigating brutal murders and rapes, which hardly fits with the aesthetic tone set so far.
In Nintendo’s quest to battle against the small library of the Wii U, they may be forgetting what made the Wii such a success. Even if the motion controls weren’t perfect, it was the titles and ideas that were unlike anything other consoles offered. Wii sports and the Mii were all great ideas, things that helped define the console. If the Switch hopes to be as defining and popular a console, its time would be better spent creating an identity and not looking to revive games several years old for a next gen console – especially if, like with L.A. Noire – these titles are going to be released on graphically superior consoles.
