The 2017 International Dota 2 Championships concluded over the weekend and Team Liquid took home the win in dominant fashion, dismantling Newbee in three straight games in a best of five finale. This marks the first ever Aegis of Champions for Liquid and the first for a European squad since Sweden’s Alliance took home the honor in 2013.

The International is one of the biggest events in esports and in total, $24 million was up for grabs at Valve’s annual event. Liquid took home $10.8 million for their first place finish, while Newbee walked away with $3.9 million for their efforts. Rounding out the top three was LGD.FY who earned $2.4 million on the back of a strong early showing.

Liquid cruised through the lower bracket with relative ease before facing off with LGD.FY in the semi-finals. After dropping a hard fought first game, Liquid went on to win two straight and advance to the finals, never looking back.

The final three matches were all about aggressive tactics for Liquid. They never let up, barely giving Newbee a chance to breathe. The 3-0 sweep marks the first time any team has swept the final at the International.

This was the fourth time a Team Liquid made it into The International and the first ever win for the squad. Liquid was also the only non-Chinese team to make the top five, with Russia’s Virtus.pro taking home the sixth spot. Newbee on the other hand was trying to become the first ever team to win multiple International titles.

Last year two American teams finished in the tournament’s top three, but this Evil Geniuses and Digital Chaos only managed ninth and tenth place finishes respectively.
